US music producer and CD pioneer Phil Ramone dies

   The US music producer and pioneer of digital recording, Phil
Ramone, has died aged 72, his son has said.
   Ramone is regarded as one of the most successful producers in history, winning 14 Grammy awards andworking with stars such as RayCharles, Bob Dylan, Elton John and Paul McCartney.
    He produced the first major
commercial release on CD, Billy Joel's 1982 album 52nd Street. Some of his awards were for soundtracks to TV shows, films and stage plays.
    A native of South Africa, Ramone learnt the violin at the age of three and became a US citizen at the age of
12.
    He had opened his own recording studio before he reached 20. He produced three records that won Grammys for album of the year - Paul Simon's Still Crazy After All These
Years in 1976, 52nd Street and Ray
Charles' Genius Loves Company in
2005.
    Ramone also won Grammys for soundtracks to Flashdance, the Broadway musical Promises, Promises, and an Emmy for a TV special about jazz great Duke Ellington.
    He was known for bringing artists together for duets, producing efforts by Frank Sinatra and Bono, and Tony Bennett and Paul McCartney among
others.
    Confirming his death, his son Matt Ramone said he was "very loving and will be missed".

Chinua Achebe Dies At 82

    The well known Nigerian author Chinua Achebe, who wrote "Things Fall Apart," died on Thursday in Boston after a brief illness. He was 82 at the time of his death.
    This occurence is a tragic one though he lived a fruitful life.
    Achebe, often called the father of African literature, was best known for "Things Fall Apart," about the Igbo culture and the impact of colonialism
on Africa. The novel, published in
1958, sold more than 12 million
copies and was translated into dozens of languages....

Will Okorocha be impeached???

    With the alleged bribery scandal in the Imo State Government, which has led to the impeachment moves against the state Deputy Governor, Mr. Jude Agbaso, a group noted for its serious influence on governance, "SAVE IMO", has petitioned the Speaker of the Imo State House of assembly to immediately commence impeachment moves against the state Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, for abuse of office.
    A three-page petition accompanied with a sworn affidavit of facts sworn to at the High Court Registry, Owerri and signed by the coordinator of the group, Mr. Ebubeagu Godwin Ekenulo, urged the assembly to immediately investigate and start impeachment proceedings on the governor for alleged abuse of office, diversion of government revenue and other related offences which the governor has used his office to
commit.
    "We wish to most sincerely in the interest of the masses of Imo State and to save the state from
monumental fraud and diversion of government resources presently going on in the state to present to Mr. Speaker, these catalog of impeachable offences committed by the governor of our state on which we call on you for his immediate impeachment," Ekenulo said.
    Although, the governor's spokesperson, Mr. Ebere Uzoukwa, said such a petition had not reached the governor and as such
government could not react to it, he stated that the Imo Assembly has a right to perform its oversight functions and could go ahead to investigate the governor, whom he said has not committed any impeachable offence.
    The Save Imo group who also sent a separate petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) identified about 13 offences which it accused the governor of committing while in office, adding
that if nothing urgent was done to
bring the governor to book, the
state would be insolvent and
uninhabitable for the people.
Ekenulo commended the state
assembly for starting the
impeachment process on the
deputy governor, but noted that the governor being a partner of the deputy governor had committed more incriminating impeachable offences and in the process had abused his oath of office, and therefore cannot be left unscratched.
    Among the list of offences the
governor was accused of include:
unlawful use and diversion of
government revenue and funds to
establish his private University at
Ogboko contrary to his oath of
office; concealment of revenue from proceeds of the concession of Imo Concorde Hotel, Adapalm, Imo Transport Company, Imo General Hospitals and conversion of proceeds of same to personal use contrary to his oath of office as governor; approval of 100 percent upfront payment for road contract to JPROS International Nig. Ltd. without proper evidence of work completion contrary to the public procurement laws. Other offences are: unlawful use of the proceeds of the Imo State bond by diversion to unapproved project contrary to the Imo State bond law; unlawful use of the proceeds of the bond to the tune of over N13.3 billion without appropriation; approval of award of contract to JPROS International without advertisement and other contract processes contrary to the public procurement laws; unauthorised and unlawful use of local government allocation to the tune of N63 billion; and conversion of.government assets and properties such as Imo deputy governor's lodge and two-story building at Director's quarters, Orlu road to
Lamonde Hotel, a company in which he has interest contrary to his oath of office.
    The coordinator of the group,
however, appealed to the assembly to show that her action against the deputy governor was not propelled or induced but motivated by genuine concern for probity, transparency and accountability, stating "I believe that the assembly is
desirous to fight corruption, so they will not be selective. I also believe that the assembly will treat this matter this dispatch in order to make Imo people believe that they are fair and that their oversight function is in order."

   BlackBerry's app selection for its new BlackBerry 10 devices just reached a 100,000. RIM
announced that it added more than 30,000 new games and apps within seven weeks!!! Their goal
was to get them all in before this
BlackBerry smartphone
becomes available.
    Additionally, BlackBerry
noted that the BlackBerry 10
apps will be available soon including CNN, Skype, eBay and The Daily Show, among others.
    "The response to the BlackBerry 10 platform and applications has been
outstanding. Customers are thrilled with the applications already available, and the catalog just keeps growing, now with more than 100,000 apps," said Martyn Mallick, vice president of
global alliances at BlackBerry in a
company release. "Top brands and
application providers are joining us every day and are seeing the benefits of being early supporters of the new platform. We constantly hear from developers that the BlackBerry 10 tools are easy to build with and that we provide opportunities for app differentiation that they do not see on other platforms."
    BlackBerry 10 is scheduled to first launch in the U.S. on AT&T's network. The company previously noted that the BB10 devices would also be available with other U.S. carriers, including T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless.

‘Oga at the top’: will the Lagos NSCDC commandant be sanctioned???

    THE Commandant General of
Nigeria Security and Civil Defence
Corps (NSCDC), Dr Ade Abolurin,
has said the Lagos State Corps
Commandant, Mr Obafaiye Shem,
did not commit any punishable
offence on the account of the
recent television interview he
granted, while he debunked
rumours making the rounds that
he had been suspended.
Abolurin made this clarification on
Wednesday, in Abuja, at the
annual national cooperative
society meeting of the corps.
He said if the Lagos State
commandant was interviewed, and
in the process lost his composure,
that “did not call for sanction.”
It will be recalled that the popular
slogan, “my oga at the top” joke
recently emanated from the
Channels Television interview
granted the Lagos State
Commandant of NSCDC, Mr
Obafaiye Shem.
He said, “it is an internal measure;
we will keep you posted; we are
still on course because he has not
committed any offence. If a
person is being interviewed, and in
the process the person could not
compose himself, that does not
result to a crime; it is a question of
maturity,” he stated.
Abolurin, however, expressed
determination to engage officers
in more training and re-training.
He said, “You know I am an
advocate of building skills,
encouraging trainings, human
development and capacity
building. We are trying at all levels
to ensure that our men are well
trained and well articulated
because training is supposed to be
continuous,” he added.
President of the Cooperative,
Deputy Corps Commandant, Abi
David, said the NSCDC cooperative
society had laudable plans to
affect lives positively within the
corps.
    He said there was a plan to
immediately commence building
of the co-operative secretariat
(comprising supermarket, store
and five standard offices) through
direct labour, which he added
would be commissioned by their
grand patron.

reported the false information.
    Yemi tweeted, "PLEASE get your
facts right. I did not make Anne
Idibia/ Macauley's dress as you've
stated in your blog. Thank
goodness for Google Alerts. Just
seen some false information about
me/Kosibah that could have
damaged my brand."
    Yemi later tweeted, "She has taken
it down. Hope all the people that
may have seen it now know its not
true."

Has Voyager 1 left the solar system?

    Scientific confusion was the order of
the day on Wednesday following a
report that suggested a 35-year-old
space probe had become the first
human-made object to make it
beyond our solar system.
    New Mexico State University
astronomer W.R. Webber reported in
a paper published online by the
American Geophysical Union that the
spacecraft had made it beyond the
influence of the sun because Voyager
1 had measured a drastic change in
radiation levels last Aug. 25.
    But no sooner had that report
appeared than NASA said it begged to
differ with any interpretation that
suggested that its spacecraft had
definitely left the solar system.
     "The Voyager team is aware of reports
today that NASA's Voyager 1 has left
the solar system," said Edward Stone,
Voyager project scientist based at the
California Institute of Technology,
Pasadena, Calif. "It is the consensus of
the Voyager science team that Voyager
1 has not yet left the solar system or
reached interstellar space."
    Stone said the Voyager team reported
last December that Voyager 1 was
within a region called 'the magnetic
highway' where energetic particles
changed dramatically. "A change in
the direction of the magnetic field is
the last critical indicator of reaching
interstellar space and that change of
direction has not yet been observed,"
Stone said.
    The American Geophysical Union
subsequently revised the "left-the-
solar-system" headline on its news
release with a less dramatic one that
said Voyager 1 had "entered a new
region of space."
    Webber's research suggested that
when the spacecraft was roughly 18
billion kilometres from the sun last
Aug. 25, it suddenly nearly stopped
detecting "anomalous" cosmic rays.
That is a type of radiation trapped in
the outer part of the heliosphere, the
vast "bubble" of space affected by the
sun's magnetic field, which encloses
the solar system.
    Meanwhile, he said the spacecraft had
detected record levels of "galactic"
cosmic rays, radiation that comes
from outside the solar system.
    Webber said it's not clear whether
Voyager 1 has actually entered
interstellar space or some other zone
beyond the solar system.
    "It's outside the normal heliosphere, I
would say that," Webber said in a
statement. "We're in a new region.
And everything we're measuring is
different and exciting."
